On 20 May 2022, Dragør Municipality celebrates the 500th anniversary of Dutch immigration to Store Magleby (1521-2021).
The story is amazing and draws threads all the way up to the present. It’s about traditions, culture, identity and vegetables.
In 2021, it was 500 years ago that Christian II of Denmark entered into an agreement in which 184 Dutch farmers were given the right to use and own property throughout Amager and Saltholm. The dating is due to a royal letter of privilege from 1521. Immigrants from the Netherlands have since shaped Amager’s cultural history and in particular Store Magleby in Dragør Municipality. In folklore, Store Magleby is still called the “Dutch city”.
Although traditional Dutch agriculture has been replaced by a modern community, there are families among the citizens of the municipality who can trace their lineage back to the original immigration.
The 500th anniversary should have been celebrated in 2021. But due to the corona pandemic, Dragør Municipality decided to postpone the celebration until Friday 20 May 2022.
Helping to celebrate the day are Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands.
